Key Stage 3 Assessment Rationale

At Yate Academy, assessment takes the form of both regular formative assessment in lessons alongside 2 formal summative assessment points throughout each year at Key Stage 3.

The aims of our Assessments cover five main areas:

Progress - Accurately track the progress of students and identify those who are falling behind.

Teaching - Inform classroom teachers about areas of strength and weakness of their class and enable them to plan effectively to close these gaps.

Curriculum - Provide useful data to teaching teams to inform their future curriculum planning and improvements. This data allows them to assess the impact of any previous curriculum evaluation and improvement.

Preparation - Prepare students for future external assessments by building and embedding high quality revision strategies and study habits.

Communication - Inform families in a meaningful way about their child’s progress and attainment, advising them of the best ways to support their child.

Key Stage 4 Assessment:

At Yate Academy, GCSE assessment takes the form of both regular formative assessment in lessons alongside 4 formal summative assessment points throughout Year 10 and 11. Each summative assessment replicates what students will do in their final summer GCSE exams in Year 11.

In the summer term of Year 10 all students complete their first Mock Exam season. In Year 11, students complete a Mock Exam season in November and March and their final GCSE exams in May - June.

Key Stage 5 Assessment:

At Yate Academy, assessment in the sixth form takes the form of both regular formative assessent in lessons alongside 6 formal summative assessment points through Year 12 and Year 13. Each summative assessment uses past paper exam questions to build students sequentially up to full mock papres.
