Yate Academy

attendance and punctuality

At Yate Academy, we believe that every day a student spends with us is an opportunity for discovery, friendship, and growth. When a student is in school, on time, and ready to learn, they aren't just "attending lessons"—they are building the habits and connections that lead to a happy, successful life.

We see attendance as a true partnership between school and home. We know that life can be busy and challenges arise, but by working together, we can ensure your child never misses out on the magic of learning.

Our Shared Expectations

For our Students:

  • Walking through the door together: We love welcoming our students through the front door by 8:35 am. Arriving on time ensures they can start the day calmly alongside their peers.

  • Ready for the day: Bringing the right equipment and a positive mindset helps every student feel confident from the very first bell.

For our Families:

  • Encouragement: Being your child’s biggest cheerleader for regular attendance.

  • Preparation: Helping your child arrive punctually and prepared, so they can dive straight into the day’s adventures.

Reporting absence due to illness

If your child is unwell, we are here to help. To keep our community safe and accounted for, please let us know as early as possible.

  • Contact us before 8:30 am on the morning of each day of absence.

  • Call our Attendance Officer: 01454 333583

  • Email us: absence@yateacademy.co.uk or emorris@yateacademy.co.uk

Unsure if they are too ill? Sometimes it’s a tough call. You can check the NHS "Is my child too ill for school?" guidance here for a helpful helping hand.

Working Together to Stay on Track

We keep a close eye on attendance because we care about your child’s progress.

  • The 95% Milestone: We consider attendance below 95% (about 10 days across the year) a "cause for concern." If we notice a dip, our first step will always be to reach out to you to see how we can support your family in getting things back on track.

  • Medical Support: For absences longer than three days, or if attendance falls below 90%, we will ask for medical evidence. This helps us ensure we have the right information to support your child's return to the classroom.

Absence from school during term time

To give your child the best possible continuity in their learning, the Department for Education (DfE) and Yate Academy strongly discourage term-time absences.

  • Exceptional Circumstances: We can only authorise leave in truly exceptional circumstances. If you feel your situation fits this, please write to the Headteacher to explain your request.

  • Health First: While we ask that routine dental and doctor appointments are booked outside school hours, we will authorise medical procedures. Just share the appointment card or letter with us so we can update our records.

  • A Note on Legal Guidelines: We are required to follow local authority and DfE guidelines regarding unauthorised absences. This can include penalty notices (starting at £80 per parent, per child). Our goal is always to avoid this through early communication and partnership with you.

We are here to support you. If there is any hurdle—big or small—preventing your child from attending school, please reach out to us promptly. By talking early, we can find solutions together.
