Yate Academy

TUTOR time READING PROGRAMME -ttrp

“The more you read, the more you know. The more that you learn, the places you’ll go.” Dr Seuss could have been talking about the students at Yate Academy with this quote as reading has become a core part of everyday life.

Every day at Yate Academy begins with pace and purpose. We invest time in the morning to ensure there aren’t barriers preventing our students from accessing the education which we offer every day. We waste no seconds in lessons, so we ensure that every student has the right equipment before they go into lessons.

We rigorously check homework, ensuring no students are left behind.

We then invest time in reading, as we know that this is key to breaking the disadvantage cycle.

Students in Years 7 to 10 read in their tutor groups. We read a range of classic stories from different cultures, traditions and time periods, as well as a careful selection of important works of non-fiction. By reading to them, we are able to supplement the text with valuable context that boosts student knowledge and understanding. In addition to providing our students with access to some of the best fiction and non-fiction ever written, the tutor group reading programme is also designed to complement the curriculum, drawing links to ideas, themes and figures studied in lessons. The reading programme immerses students in literature, expanding their vocabulary and exploration of other worlds, whilst reading as one group together. We have a diverse and inclusive reading canon, which creates empathy for others from all walks of life.
